YouTubers of Wahlert

“A picture is worth a thousand words. So a video is worth… a lot of words,” Sam Sykes, ‘19, claims. That is part of the reason Sykes, along with several other students, creates videos on YouTube and maintains a channel.

Sykes has a YouTube channel called “filmedbysam.” Sykes describes his videos as, “Action and sports videography.” He uses a glide camera that inverts weight in a way that, during the filming process, the camera remains still even when he is walking.

After filming, Sykes edits the video, adds sound effects, and uploads it to YouTube. “The videos are fun to make, and I think the end product comes out well. I enjoy the process and the results,” Sykes said.

Cara Sullivan, ‘19, has a variety of videos on her channel “Carabear Sully,” featuring guests like Jacob Nuti and Sam Sykes, ‘19. Cara’s channel includes challenge videos and an original song called “I Love Food.”

“Hello, my name is Cara Sullivan, normal teen by day, award-winning songwriter by night,” Sullivan begins the introduction to her original song, proceeding to describe her songwriting process.

After filming, Sullivan edits her videos to cut out the parts she doesn’t want in the final product. Sullivan leaves us with, “If anyone tells you that polka dots aren’t a color, they’re lying.”

Isabel Shubatt and Lizzy Fitzsimmons, ‘19, have a YouTube channel named “The Izzy and Lizzy Show.” Their channel contains challenge videos and tags with some other Wahlert students as guests.

“My favorite video on the channel is probably the ‘Best Friends Tag,’” Shubatt says. “Lizzie and I worked hard on it, and I think it’s pretty great. Overall, our videos are just fun to make and share.” Shubatt and Fitzsimmons film with their camera or phone, edit the video, add a background song, upload it to YouTube, and then post it. Shubatt describes her channel as, “Probably ballin.”

Taylor Reichel, ‘16, has six videos posted on her YouTube channel, “Tay Reichel.” All of them are songs that she covered, adjusted, recorded, stressed over, edited for a month, and then finally posted, including pieces like, “Home,” “Another Love,” and “Strange Birds.”

“It’s a very stressful process, but it’s nice to see the final product. I’m probably the most proud of ‘Home,’” says Reichel. “It took me the longest, and I’m happy with the way it came out. All in all, the process is just very rewarding.”

Reichel also notes that, “It’s called garbage can, not garbage cannot. I find that very motivational while undergoing the stress of video creation,” she said.
