Fleeing the Nest

By Adam Helmle

It’s almost time to hang up the ol’ khaki shorts and polo shirts and call my time here quits. The last two months of the school year are when senioritis kicks in, making even writing this article hard, let alone doing Mrs. Budden’s pre-Calc homework. Sometimes in this situation it is extremely hard to say goodbye, but for some reason this time it will be pretty easy.

Maybe it’s the fact that I’ve been here for four years, or maybe getting accepted into a good college makes this situation easier. Needless to say, I am extremely thankful for all of the opportunities and the many memories Wahlert has afforded me. Meeting Nick LeGrand freshman year, making a French class rap with the former student/rapper Adam Bandstra, and watching the senior skits were some memories that I wouldn’t trade for anything. But I am also ready to move on.

To move on, you must remember where you come from. Most of us have gone to school together for seven or more years. That’s almost half of our lives. We owe a tremendous thanks not only to the teachers who got us to this point, but to all of our classmates who we’ve known since we were 6th graders. To say that these last seven years of Catholic education have made me a better person is an understatement.

I wouldn’t change the countless Rock, Paper, Scissors games that decided who took up the lunch trays. Or the times that we sat at the same freshman table all the way until junior year. And who could forget the freshman year Wahlert vs. Senior basketball game?

It seems like just yesterday I was entering Wahlert for the first time, and soon many of us will be leaving for the last time as students. As I leave for the last time, I will be as I was as a freshman, scared and excited at the same time. Who knows what the next four years will bring? It’s going to be hard to beat the time I had here.

Wahlert has a profound impact on most students that walk throughout its halls. Hopefully, your experiences, senior or not, have been good enough to make the years you have been here worth it. So here’s to the last couple of years, to all of my classmates, and to all of the experiences that we have shared over these last four years. Thank you, Wahlert. For everything. See you all at the ten year class reunion!
