Pet of the week: Cosmo

Cosmo is a German Shepherd. His owners are Rachel Eddy, ‘20, and Jack Eddy, ‘17. Cosmo is 13 years old, and he loves eating green beans and meat, but he hates fruit. He also loves playing catch with tennis balls and going boating with his family, but he doesn’t like the water.

Cosmo is not just a regular German Shepherd who likes to play catch and eat dog food. The Eddys found Cosmo at a farm. The farmer was going to kill him because he kept chasing the chickens and other animals on the farm. “We were lucky we found him,” said Rachel.

Cosmo originally was going to be a police dog or a service dog, a dog that helps people who are disabled. “He likes to be around any person that he can protect,” said Rachel. Although Cosmo would probably be a great police dog or service dog, he suffers from Crohn’s disease. “Crohn’s disease is like a disease that eats him from the inside out, so you have to keep an eye on him,” said Eddy. The Eddys have to give Cosmo lots of medicines and go to the vet for frequent appointments.

Cosmo had an additional  scare last year when he got Lymes disease. “He was very weak and lost a lot of muscle. He didn’t eat either,” said Rachel. Eddy thought Cosmo was dying because he would sleep all day and not move or eat. “We thought he was getting old, but he ended up being just fine,” said Eddy.

The Eddys are glad to have found their amazing German Shepherd. They are glad that he is their dog, and not a police dog or a service dog.
