Shubatt’s Success

Sophia Shubatt, ‘18 is one of the many people involved in this year’s musical, Urinetown. Sophie is not one of the actors performing on stage, however. She is one of the stage managers of the show.

Sophie has been building up her off-stage career since she was 13, when she joined crew at Mazzuchelli just short of six years ago.

Once she began her backstage work, there was no going back. She realized she had a natural gift for things like this, and unexpectedly had a great time. She spends most weekends helping out at crew calls, where she builds and paints sets., She has also created and directed a short film and dabbled in the art of playwriting. She acts as Muenster’s sidekick, coordinates the crew, and does the tasks Mr. Muenster doesn’t normally do.

Sophie jokes, “Stage managing is weird for me because I love getting attention, but no one ever gets to see me doing this except for the people in the show.”

Shubatt partakes in many other activities as well. She is a member of the diving team, Yappers, Student Senate, Gleaner, and DAYLC. She also takes part in her Youth Leadership Team at her local church, Resurrection. Through these activities, she has developed her leadership skills. “People call me bossy, but if a man was in charge, they’d just call him a boss,” says Shubatt.

Sophie has very strong feminist beliefs and believes all humans should be treated as equals. She believes that anyone should be able to work in a place of power, no matter what race, gender, or religion, so that is why she is very opinionated when it comes to politics. Last year, Shubatt interned with the Hillary for Iowa office in Dubuque and helped to lead a caucus location.

Sophia’s dedication to her hobbies and activities does not overshadow her attention to academics. Her hard work to be a leader in the classroom has allowed her to also be successful in her difficult classes.

Sophia works hard and deserves all the success that comes her way. She is currently looking at colleges and thinking about her future. “I have spent a lot of time here at Wahlert, and I love to dedicate myself to the school.”
