Going for the Gold
Impulse Show Choir finished third at West Dubuque, finishing their competition season solidly. After five all-day competitions over five consecutive weekends, Impulse ended their final competition out of breath and in need of sleep. They perform one last time at the Golden Finale, which will be this weekend on March 20th.
For seniors like Hannah Gasper, ‘16, this marked the last time she would compete in a high school show choir.
“Competition season is always really taxing, and it soaks up a lot of your time,” Gasper said. “But it’s my favorite school activity, and I’m really going to miss it. Then again, I guess we still have Golden Finale to look forward to.”
The Golden Finale, the show choirs’ annual fundraiser, allows parents, relatives and community members to dine and watch Impact and Impulse perform one last time before the show choir season officially comes to a close. This year’s event will be in the gym and costs $35.
The Finale concludes a long season. “We’ve been learning and practicing our show since before school began, so Golden Finale is kind of our victory performance,” Gasper said. “It’s actually really cool: the gym gets all fancied up, we set up a stage, and we bring out all these tables and chairs. Then our choirs perform, and it’s really fun.”
After so much time and effort, some might think that show choir members are ready to move on. Not so. “It’s funny,” said Gasper. “Throughout school, I’ve spent almost 28 months in show choir mode, and I’m still not ready to be done with it!”
