On Friday, May 2 students from Mrs. Leonard’s Spanish IV classes and Ms. Santiago’s Honors Spanish II class spent the afternoon teaching elementary school students at Resurrection. For the seniors in Mrs. Leonard’s class, this teaching experience served as the semester final.

“The greatest learning experience is to teach,” explains Mrs. Leonard.

Students spent about an hour instructing the Resurrection students on various Spanish lessons, including numbers, colors, and interests. The high schoolers, in groups of three, taught a small group of 5-7 elementary students. The high school students were required to create a storybook in Spanish based on their students’ likes and dislikes, along with arranging a game for them to play and bringing in a treat as a reward.

“It was a really eye-opening and enjoyable experience,” Christine Isaac, ‘15, says. “Not only did it helps us to know the Spanish language better, but it also put us in the teacher’s shoes.”

This teaching experience is one that Mrs. Leonard hopes to continue for future classes.

“Keeping the kids engaged is the best way for [high school] students to learn,” Leonard says.
