The Lone Golfer

State is a goal most athletes work towards all season. That State appearance is the time to showcase one’s abilities and prove to test oneself against others with similar skills. Although the team was one stroke shy of qualifying for state, Charlie Smith, ‘15, was the only golfer from Wahlert to qualify.

Charlie Smith, ’15, competed at the State golf meet in mid-October. He finished 34th out of 76 golfers

Smith has been involved in golf for all of his three years in high school.

Charlie first started golfing because he was much better at golf than football. Smith noted that he is definitely the best golfer in his family. He enjoys it because it helps him get his mind off everything else.

Even so, “State was very nerve-wracking,” Smith said, although it didn’t seem to show the first day when he finished in 11th place.

But the second day was a struggle. Smith ended his state journey in 34th place out of 76 opponents. “I wish I would’ve focused more the second day,” said Smith.

Luckily, Charlie has a whole year and summer to improve his skills, and he hopes to return to state for his senior year.
