Self defense gives students a chance to improve their skills

JOG IT OUT Students warm up in self defense class.

As the new semester kicks off, several new classes are being offered. One of these is the self defense class being taught by Mr. Joel Allen. In this class, students are taught simple but effective self-defense moves.

The class consists of several different units where students practice various methods of self-defense. “We cover three units, and the first one is on how to wrestle,” said Allen. “Then we build off of that into our second unit, which is going to be on jiu jitsu, and we’ll finish with boxing.”

Students say that even though the class is full of physical moves and specific strategies, it is not too challenging. “It’s a little chaotic, but it can be a lot of fun. I would say the wrestling part of it is enjoyable especially when we learn how to flip someone, but overall, I think it’s beneficial and a great workout,” said Landen Schmitt, ‘22.

For wrestlers, the class proves to be a good opportunity for improving their skills. “I enjoy practicing moves I am already familiar with and getting better at them myself,” said Alana Duggan, ‘22, who won a girls’ state wrestling title. “I decided to try self-defense because I already had some knowledge in wrestling, and I figured I could expand on that in order to learn how to protect myself more.”

Even for non-wrestlers, though, the class is still enjoyable. “It’s just fun throwing people around,” said Caden Brimeyer, ‘23.

As for the future of the class, Mr. Allen has hopes that it will continue smoothly. “I hope that it’s an option in the future, and I think that it will be. We want to offer courses that kids want and need.”
