From March 25th-29th, about 60 choir and band students experienced the “Empire State of Mind” when they traveled to the Big Apple to sing at Lincoln Center.

The students left Wahlert at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning and arrived in New York around noon ET.

The days were jam-packed as the musicians toured many of New York City’s popular attractions including the newly opened 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Empire State Building, Central Park, Times Square and Lincoln Center.

All of the students saw at least two Broadway shows and attended a Broadway 101 Clinic where they got to have a Q&A with a Broadway actor.

Katie Anderson, ‘15, says, ‘The Broadway shows were by far the best part. All of the actors are so talented. By going to see Les Miserables during free time on Saturday, I was able to see Ramin Karimloo as Jean Val Jean. It was an experience I’ll never forget.”

On Friday night, the Concert Choir performed with Chelsea High School, a school from Chelsea, Michigan, in the Starr Theater located inside of Alice Tully Hall. Most of the crowd was made up of parent chaperones that went on the trip with either Wahlert or Chelsea.

Many of the students describe the trip as “unforgettable.” Clare McCullough, Luke Kelly and Dorothy Jo Oberfoell, ‘15, all say, “We want to go back.”

They may not be able to return immediately, but they hope to return to New York City sometime in the future.
