Students ‘pumped’ to give blood

Here at Wahlert, students are given a plentiful number of opportunities to make a difference in our world.

Recently, one of these opportunities occurred at the blood drive on Nov. 7. The blood drive was hosted by the Red Cross and was offered as an opportunity to students above the age of 16.

Many students generously donated blood including first time donor Matt Rusch, ‘18. He said that he was super nervous at first, but knowing that it was for a good cause calmed him down.

Although, the nerves almost got the best of him, Rusch says, “Receiving the cookies and bottomless cranberry juice after donating was very rewarding.”

Jimmy Chapman, ’18, enjoys his juice while he donates blood at the fall blood drive.

However, the donors aren’t the only ones being rewarded. Facts show that for each donation, three different lives can be saved. On average in America, someone is in need of blood every two seconds. Also, 36,000 units of blood are needed each day here in the States. That is why just one donation, a simple act of kindness, can make a difference. Thanks to the 58 students who signed up to give blood on Monday, we were able to give the Red Cross 37 units of blood.

Olivia Gaul, ‘17, is impressed by her classmates’ generosity.  She said,”My favorite part is definitely looking around and seeing all of my classmates, who are so happy and energized to donate blood and save lives.”

This was the fourth time Gaul has donated at the school blood drive. She added that she loves the blood drive because it’s a quick and simple way of giving to people in need.

Going to the blood drive at Wahlert in the fall and spring is an easy way to give back to our society. Although it can be nerve-wracking, students are always given great hospitality by the school, the Red Cross and the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center.

The next blood drive will be in the spring around April. Students are always encouraged to give back to the community, and donating blood is one, among many, of the things that can be done.
