Spicing up the holiday season

Izzy Ungs ’23 and Landon Stoll ’21, got the in the Christmas spirit at Reflections in the Park.

The holiday season is full of love, family, friends, and traditions. In Dubuque, there are various fun activities and events to attend during the holiday season. Some students offer insights on how to make the most of the holidays.

“Every year, my friends and I get together to do a gift exchange. We have been doing this since middle school, and we are still carrying the tradition as seniors,” shared Makayla Schockemoehl, ‘22.

As an alternative to a typical gift exchange, “White Elephant,” is extremely fun and popular. From the goofy gimmicks to the great gifts that are brought, you are sure to leave a White Elephant exchange with something interesting.

“I did my first white elephant sophomore year in Gleaner with Ms. Gaul. It was a blast and is now a tradition I have used with friends and family,”  Claire Walker, ‘22, said.

One great organization to get involved in is the Salvation Army. You may notice the red buckets popping up with the chiming bells outside of local grocery stores. Volunteer spots are always available to ring the bell for even as little as an hour. Give back to the community this December and help the less fortunate if you are able!

Outside of the classic traditions, the Dubuque community offers many opportunities to get in the Christmas spirit. One of the most popular activities is the Reflections in the Park, located in Murphy Park off of Grandview Avenue.

“Living really close to the Reflections in the Park can be extremely chaotic and inconvenient; however, they make for a beautiful view everytime I drive by. Each year, I think they get better and better,” shared Tatum Manternach, ‘23.

In addition to the Christmas lights, you can get in the baking spirit down at Candle Ready Cakes. They offer Christmas cookie decorating classes weekly in the month of December that are not only fun, but also delicious.

And if you are on the adventurous side of the spectrum, the Mystic Ice Rink always makes for a fun outing. Just try not to break a leg!

Whether you are a homebody or an adventurer, there is sure to be a fun holiday activity in the community for you. Show your Christmas spirit by getting out and enjoying this holiday season!
