Wahlert teachers team up to compete in a rec volleyball league at Courtside.

Faculty and staff at Wahlert are not only good at their day jobs. A Wahlert staff-led rec volleyball team recently won a tournament championship. The team included teachers Cole Smith, Aaron Behnke, Sean Campbell and athletic trainer/ assistant athletic director Molly Pilcher.

While there was little volleyball experience among the group, they still managed to have great success. “We were back-to-back champs in the Wednesday rec league and our names will be forever be etched in history due to Courtside being shut down,” said Smith.

The team’s chemistry may have started with their long history with each other since  seven out of eight of the players came from Loras College. They strung a team together, building their chemistry more and more with each practice and game. They used this chemistry to adopt a gritty style of play that gets the job done.

“Playing with the same people the last few years has been a blast. It’s a way that and the staff and I can relax and have fun with each other,” said Pilcher.

Being on a team like this can inevitably lead to great friendships.. “We have met lots of people play at Courtside, and we have brought in some of our own friends from outside Wahlert for the team,” said Smith.

The team allows the teachers and staff to meet new people and create new friendships. They also do it to alleviate frustrations  and to have a good time.

With Courtside closing March 3, the the team will have to stop playing for a little while until they find a new tournament. The teachers in the day and the stars of the Courtside at night will be on a short break, but they will never forget the two championships and friendships they earned.
