Cold and flu season has arrived and is in full swing, but there is a way to avoid it. A tactic that has gained recognition in the past few years is the resource of homeopathic remedies. According to the American Institute of Homeopathy, this is “the practice of medicine that embraces a holistic, natural approach to the treatment of the sick.”

Essential oils are a simple natural way to to aleve many ailments. It’s possible to use them topically, but people primarily inhale essential oils, using a diffuser. “My favorite way to use essential oils is with a diffuser,” Hayley Welbes, ‘21, claims. “I use peppermint for congestion, nausea, and headaches. Lemongrass helps restore energy and relieve stress, and I have a whole book at home of essential oil combinations.”

There seems to be a million other remedies involving essential oils, but remember that essential oils are to never be ingested.  Although tempting when a sore throat arises, digesting essential oils often causes more problems than it solves. Instead, try drinking a cup of tea. There are multiple types of teas that can help with cold symptoms, inflammation, and even mood swings.

Epsom salt baths is another remedy that can help tremendously with inflammation and sore muscles. The magnesium and sulfate within the salts break down in water, being absorbed through the skin when in water. ABC News suggests that epsom salts can help muscle recovery, as well as relax the muscles.

These are a couple of ways to get rid of toxins, but what are some methods of preventing illness naturally? Living in a healthy environment can be very helpful. House plants such as english ivy, peace lilies, and spider plants can remove up to 90% of toxins from the air, according to NASA.

Abbie Wallace, ‘21, believes her plants play a major part in her life. “They definitely boost my mental health. I have around 20 of them now.”

Taking natural steps to improve your health could lessen the probability of side effects that stem from pharmaceuticals. If anything, it won’t hurt you, so why not try it? Homeopathic remedies may not cure cancer, but it could be a healthier way to prevent illness before they get to an extreme state.
