Rec League
Although the Wahlert men’s basketball team’s season ended in March, another season of basketball begins in the coming weeks. Even if students did not play on the Wahlert basketball team, they have the opportunity to play in the Rec League at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
Denver Link, who has played the last two seasons, also tries to get others involved. “I think it’s a great opportunity to play basketball and show what I can do on the court,” Link said. “It provides those of us who don’t play basketball for Wahlert the chance to continue playing basketball.”
Austin Savary, who played basketball for Wahlert, has been the Rec League team’s coach for the past two years. “It’s just fun to go have some fun while helping my friends play the game of basketball,” Savary said. “I just like the experience of coaching a basketball team.”
Although Savary enjoys coaching, he also finds it difficult to sit on the sidelines. “It’s very different and stressful because I can’t be on the floor controlling situations,” he said. “It’s different not having control over the outcome of the game.”
Savary’s team consists of eight players: Michel Morel, Brandon Morgan, Denver link, Jack Kamentz, Ryan Rodgers, Matt Riley, and Dalton Chapman.
The team competes against other Rec League teams around the city. “I love competing against the other teams,” Brandon Morgan, ‘17, said. “Most of the other teams are close to our skill level, so it is great competition.”
Last season, the team made the playoffs and hopes to improve on that finish this year. “We know we can beat all of the other teams in the league,” Morgan said. “We just have to stay focused and play up to our potential.”
