Cutting College Expenses

Where are students planning to go to college? Have they ever considered price an issue? If a student is planning on attending Sarah Lawrence College in New York, they will be paying $61,236 a year. But if a student is planning on attending Bismarck State College in North Dakota a student will pay $4,222 a year. This is the price range for college tuition.

With the over-increasing cost of attending college, scholarships are a great way to save money. They may offer anywhere from $100 up to more than $40,000. If resorting to taking out loans is a student’s only option, then applying for scholarships could benefit him or her in the long run.

Through scholarships, students can save lots of money. Some scholarships only require an essay. Therefore signing up requires mostly just putting one’s name and contact information. An essay can consist of simple content such as sports that students play, activities they are involved in, or what their future holds. Topics vary depending on the scholarships. Usually time is not an issue because students are spending possibly an hour to save thousands of dollars.

For Channing Scace, ‘15, scholarships are an important way to save money. “Scholarships help you not to spend as much money on college. It can also be a confidence booster,” she said.

Elly Whiteman, ‘15, agrees. “Scholarships are important because they take off money for your tuition for college. Colleges are super-expensive.”

Money is not the only reason to apply for scholarships. Martha Nowacki, ‘15, said, “Not only can you save money, but you can learn more about yourself through applying.”

Many scholarships ask students to define themselves. They ask what services opportunities students have accomplished, leaderships roles students have played, or sport or theatre events they’ve participated in. Looking back at what students have accomplished shows just how far students have come from freshman to senior year.

Whether the motivation is saving money or finding oneself, scholarships are a great opportunity for students. Most college tuitions are over $20,000 a year, so students can’t  let fear or procrastination stop them from saving money. They need to apply now!
