A new soccer season is upon us. After the season got canceled due to Covid last this year, the men’s and women’s soccer teams are determined to have a good season.

“Anyone getting their season canceled sucks. It’s never fun.” says forward for the men’s soccer team, Alex Eisbach, ‘23. “I was really excited to get out there and play, but it is what it is.”

After a solid 2018-2019 season finishing with a record of 12-6, Eisbach and the team look to improve this season.

“I’m excited to see how our team is going to line up. We should have good players on defense and especially offense. Hopefully, we can build a possession offense to win games and if we can do that, I think we could be really good.”

Eli Shubatt, ‘21, thinks there’s a possibility for the Eagles to get to state: To get to state, we will have to have a strong regular season to get matched with easy substate  teams and hopefully get a bye. From there we take it one game at a time.” says Shubatt. The men’s team is going for their first state title since the 2012 season.

Both teams experienced heartbreak when last season was cancelled.

¨I was devastated¨ said member of the women’s team Liliana Marrero-O’Hea. 23’ “ I was close with a few seniors and was excited to get to play with them because I knew how great we’d be, but when it was canceled I didn’t get that chance.”

The Golden Eagles look to improve from their 2018-2019 record of 12-7.

“I’m just excited to be able to play with my team. We all have fun together and I know we’re gonna be great this year.” said Marrero O’Hea.

Going to state isn’t out of the realm of possibility for the team either. “we’re all going to have to work together and fight even when it gets hard. We are all very talented and together I’m very confident we’ll go far.” Marrero O’Hea said.

The women’s team is going for their first state title since the 2005 season and their fifth championship in total.

It’s wonderful to be seeing some normalcy come back into the world with spring sports, especially soccer, coming back. The men’s and women’s teams were heartbroken last year when they found out their season got canceled. Now they’re back and have big aspirations for the 2021 season.
