The ACT: stress to impress

The ACT is known for being a very critical test in the average high school student’s career. This test helps determines the potential colleges for a student, and tests overall knowledge from the past 12 years of learning.

Not only is it stressful for those taking the test, but it is a very stressful time preparing for the it.

When students sign up for the ACT online (actstudent.org), there are a few helpful options that a student can use to prepare for the test. For example, the website offers an ACT prep book that students can order.

Besides the ACT prep book, there are other options as well.

“There are a few options, things that cost money and things that are free. The best free option is on actstudent.org. The website offers practice tests. There are also several paper handouts, which the Guidance Office has,” Mr. Mulligan, a Wahlert guidance counselor, shared.

“Beyond that, there are courses such as ZAPS that students can take to better prepare themselves, and there are all kinds of books and programs,” Mulligan continued.

Rachel Muir, ‘15, has already taken the ACT. “Many people don’t study the first time they take it,” Muir said. “After you take it once, you know what to expect and what to study for. It is common for people to take it once just to get a feel for it, then they take it again. It makes studying for it much easier the next time you take it.”

The ACT may seem like a chaotic event to many high schoolers. Although it is very scary, there are several opportunities for preparation that students can use. It is a very crucial test in a student’s life, but the stress can be limited by being prepared.
