Hitting the books in the summer sun
What’s more relaxing than lounging by the pool with a good book while getting tan? This summer many students who enjoy reading are planning to indulge. Whether you’re a fan of romance, sci-fi or mystery novels, there are plenty of new books that you may want to add to your summer reading list.
Liv King, ‘18, enjoys reading year round and has fond memories of summer reading, “My cousin and I used to read all the time in the summer when we’d visit my grandma in Florida. We would lay on the beach and read Harry Potter books together.”
For those who enjoy reading thrilling books, the bestselling author, Paula Hawkins, has a new novel that was released in the beginning of May, Into the Water. Hawkins is the author of the famous novel, The Girl on the Train. She writes thrilling stories that keep the reader engrossed throughout the book.
If you’re less into action, try picking up the new book from Nina LaCour. This book deals with a girl who leaves for college across the country and does not tell anyone before she goes. It addresses struggles that many people have during their teen years, so it’ll be a very relatable read.
Everyone loves a good love story, and there’s a great new romance novel coming from Ann Brashares. The Whole Thing Together is about a fun summer fling. It’s the classic story: boy and girl meet at the beginning of summer, they fall in love, and then fall apart by the end of August. This tale sounds like the perfect beach read on a sunny day.
“I don’t like reading during the school year because I have no time, but in the summer i try to read as much as I can. My favorite author is Jodi Picoult. I like to read books that are affiliated with movies before I watch the movie, so I can get a preview of what the movie will be like,” said Jillian Atkinson, ‘19.
Whether you’re taking a beach vacation or just looking to pass some time, reading is a great way to keep your mind fresh in the summer months.
