Wrestling managers take on state
Everybody knows about the state wrestlers, but the managers do a lot for the team, too. The managers this year are Jaidyn Bartow, ‘20, Alysia Kunkel and Audra McMahon, ‘18.
While the wrestlers are training for state, the managers time the wrestlers at practice, give them water or if someone bleeds, they wipe up the mats and take care of the bloody nose. After the wrestlers are done with practice, the managers wipe up and clean all the mats. “Cleaning up the mats is not my favorite,” Bartow notes.
“My favorite part of being a wrestling manager is state,” Kunkel said. At meets, the managers are either next to the mats with the wrestlers recording the matches or spending time with the team. They also take stats at the meets and sometimes make breakfast for the wrestlers.
At home meets, they take stats, track wrestling based on the points and what moves the wrestlers did, and record. “Being able to go to all the meets, go on the mats with the wrestlers, and being with the team is my favorite part of being a manager,” Bartow says.
The managers traveled to state with the wrestlers this year. “State is a crazy experience and very high energy!” McMahon stated. “It’s awesome to see the excitement on people’s face when a match is won. It’s a whole lot of fun!”
All the girls have different reasons why they started to become a manager. Alysia claims , “I am a singlet chaser.” Jaidyn said, “I wanted to become a manager because my brother wrestles.”
The managers are also looking for more people to manage with them. Audra stated, “Being a manager is awesome because we are all part of one big family.”
