Golden Eagles play upset once again: Improve to 2-0.
The Golden Eagle football team pulled off another upset last night taking down number 6 (3A) Assumption, 34-21.
Entering this game, Wahlert was 0-9 in their last nine meetings versus the Knights, with the closest game being 42-21 in 2015.
They broke the streak, getting a huge win to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2011.
Assumption struck first with a long touchdown on a quarterback keeper to make it 7-0 in the first.
After a bad snap on an Assumption punt attempt, Wahlert got to the Knights’ punter and set themselves up right near the goal line.
Michael Bormann, ‘25, punched it in for the Eagles to tie the game at 7 apiece.
The very next play on offense for the Knights, they fumbled. Wahlert’s Jerren Gille, ‘24, recovered the football, setting up the offense around midfield.
On a third down and eight for the Eagles, Ryan Brosius, ‘23, got the ball and took it all the way for a touchdown to make it 13-7 with 9:41 to go in the second quarter.
“It takes a team full of guys who want their running back to score,” said Brosius. “Everyone played their part tonight and blocking was great”
Turnovers were a big part in winning last week for the Eagles, and that was the case again tonight. Four total turnovers occurred, including interceptions by Owen Wallace, ‘23, Tom Scherr, ‘25, and Matthew Nachman, ‘23.
Nachman’s interception set the Eagles up around midfield, and the Eagles wasted no time as Bryce Rudiger, ‘23, hit Zach Callahan, ‘23, for a big 43-yard gain to give them first and goal.
“That was a huge momentum shifter,” said Rudiger. “We needed something like that after they broke one through. We knew we were gonna respond. It was just a matter of how.”
A few plays later Rudiger hit Owen Wallace, ‘23, for an 8-yard touchdown score to make it 20-7 Wahlert.
The next series the Knights went 3 and out, and Brosius once again showed he is a major threat in the return game. He returned a punt 56 yards to the house to make the score 27-7 towards the end of the first half.
On a 4th down and 1 for Assumption in Eagle territory, they handed the ball off and scored to cut the lead to 27-14 with 3:36 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles soon responded as Rudiger hit Alex Eisbach, ‘23, over the middle for a touchdown to make it 34-14 with 10:24 to go in the fourth.
Assumption would score one more time, but it was too late. Wahlert secured the victory.
Head coach Jamie Marshall praised his team’s leadership after the game.
“We’ve got a great group of seniors. Because of them, we have a lot of fight in us,” said Marshall.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Cedar Rapids on Friday to take on the Xavier Saints, who are also 2-0. Grab your popcorn because both teams are hot right now, and we should be in for a treat.
