The Wahlert Baseball team had yet another special season by making it to state for the second year in a row. Although the season didn’t end on a high note as they had hoped, losing to Solon 14-2, the team focuses on the good memories and their accomplishments rather than one loss.

One of the leaders of the team included Isaac Evans, ‘16 whose favorite memory of the season was getting the final out in the substate game and getting an elbow to the forehead by Austin Savary in the dogpile.

Evans said he also loved watching Thomas Haugen, 17’ dominate in JV games and enjoyed hitting more home runs in practice than Judd White, ‘16.

Another key role in the team making to state was played by middle infielder Owen Funke ‘18. He enjoyed the Waverly Shell-Rock game to go to state because he got to dump the water cooler on Coach Tuescher. Funke said, “I loved the seniors. They were really welcoming; I especially appreciate Judd White taking him under his wing. The next big role on the team was middle infielder, Alex Timp, ‘17. He enjoyed winning the substate final game, he also learned a lot from state even though he said he played badly, it was also an emotional game for him. Alex thought the seniors were good leaders and showed great integrity for the game.

Lastly, the hound on the mound, Austin Savary will always remember winning substate,  and then giving a friendly elbow to teammate Isaac Evans. He said state was fun despite the outcome.

Savary said, “The seniors really showed us how to buy in.”

As for state, Savary said he learned not to take anything for granted and to lay it all on the line because every pitch counts

The baseball team will try and make it back-to-back-to-back state appearances with all the experience the team has under it’s belt from the past two years in the program.
