Students react to a surprising Masters finish
After 63 holes of the 80th Masters, Jordan Spieth was a fan favorite and had a convincing five stroke lead entering the last nine holes of the tournament. However, Spieth’s round and victory hopes rapidly disappeared as he dropped six strokes over the next three holes and gave away the tournament to Danny Willett.
With such a dramatic finish to arguably the biggest golf tournament of the year, students at Wahlert had some flabbergasted reactions.
Matthew Becker, ‘19, had predicted Steven Bowditch would win the tournament, even after a rough start in the first round.
“I was a little upset that Bowditch couldn’t pull out a win,” said Becker, “but the Masters was very entertaining and dramatic, especially when Jordan Spieth was breaking down. The course played tough, and it was fun to see the best players in the world compete against each other.
Sam Herrig, ‘17, wanted Spieth to win because “My U.S. History group has a project on stock growth. We invested in Under Armour, because we know Jordan Spieth will boost their sales after a big win.”
Although Spieth did not win, Herrig was not upset. “I initially felt disappointed, but Under Armour stock is booming so it’s all good.”
After predicting Jason Day to win the tournament and Spieth to be the runner up, Alex Hingtgen, ‘18, was extremely surprised by their performances.
“I was absolutely astonished that my pick was incorrect,” says Hingtgen. “I had so much faith in Speith and Day, and they really did play well. Spieth just didn’t convert in the clutch and Day didn’t play his best. Spieth was the worthy winner and practically got robbed. Day on the other hand had some great shots, but couldn’t consistently play his best ball. I wouldn’t say I’m mad about what happened regarding the Masters, just a bit disappointed.”
