Masters Fever is going around at Wahlert

The most storied tradition in golf is in full swing this week. The best golfers from around the world have gathered  in Augusta, Georgia, for a shot to win a green jacket at the Masters. Names such as Spieth, Day, Johnson, and McIlroy come to mind when people predict who will weather the challenges of the Augusta National Golf Course. The four day tournament lasts 72 holes. Only half of the field in the tournament will make it past Thursday and Friday.

Around Wahlert, many also have Masters Fever and have some bold predictions on who will win. Possibly most bold of all, Matthew Becker, ‘19,  predicts that Steven Bowditch will win the tournament despite his 7 over par start to the tournament.

With a 7+ start on the first day, it can only go up,” said Becker, “ I love this guy’s ability, but I’m not sure if I appreciate the fact that he is hustling the other people. He obviously is going to shoot 18 under the next day and take the crowd by storm. From watching the film, I believe he is comparable to Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth combined. His tempo is great, and he backs it up withan electric short game.”

While Becker’s  prediction may be a bit radical, there are some very popular picks arising. Jordan Spieth and Jason Day are among the favorites to win the tournament. Alex Hingten, ‘18, thinks that Day will win, but Spieth will be close behind.

“Day’s the current number one in the world and is playing some great ball. Spieth is going to be a close second. It’s a year of top dogs finishing where they’re supposed to. Not many surprises in my top two,” said Hingten.

Sam Herrig, ‘17, wants Spieth to win because “My U.S. History group has a project on stock growth. We invested in Under Armour, because we know Jordan will boost their sales after a big win.”

Among others however, fellow Iowan Zach Johnson is a fan favorite. Born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Johnson has already won two major championships and is still very active with his home state fanbase.

“Iowa forever!” was all that Alex Walsh, ‘16, had to say about his prediction.

While many have their own opinion, only time will tell whowill outlast one of the toughest tests the PGA Tour offers, and etch their place among the best in golf.
