Cubs Fans on Cloud Nine

Screenshot 2015-10-14 at 8.57.42 PMFor years now, Chicago Cubs fans have been suffering. It’s been 106 years since they’ve won a World Series title, by far the longest streak in baseball. They’ve been known as the lovable losers of the major leagues long before any of us at Wahlert were born.

Sure, they’ve had their chances, but they’ve never capitalized. Many blame the Cubs’ struggles on the Billy Goat curse (an old story that there was a curse placed on the cubs, when a bar owner was asked to leave a Cubs playoff game because of the odor of his billy goat that he brought), but plain and simple, they’ve just never been very good.

However, this year feels different to many. The Cubs have a plethora of young talent, led by infielders Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, and a potential Cy Young winner pitcher Jake Arrieta.

Freshman John Sulentic is among the most excited of any Cubs fan on earth, as he’s been watching the Cubs struggle since birth. Sulentic has only been to three games in person, but it would be a safe bet that most nights he is glued to the television watching his team.

He’s known the feeling of getting smack from friends and family and even strangers for being a Cubs’ fan. “It hasn’t been fun because I feel like a second class citizen just for rooting for my team,” said Sulentic. “Three years ago, when we went 56 and 106 was probably the roughest time of being a Cubs’ fan.”

However, he feels like this is the year, and he has a message for all the haters of his beloved Cubbies “We’re actually good whether you like it or not,” said Sulentic. He also added that out of any years of being a loyal follower, this year has been his favorite, and he’s elated that the Cubs finally overcame their playoffs drought and beat the Cardinals.
