Adrenaline pumping, shoes squeaking, and emotions running high. The entire game was neck and neck as the women’s basketball team battled it out against Bettendorf High School Nov. 25, 2014.

With the time running out on the clock, Wahlert was down 47-50. Coach Kris Spiegler called a timeout and designed a play for Charlotte Flynn, ‘16, to shoot a three in order to tie the score. The play went off without a hitch. Flynn went up for the three and the ball rolled off of her fingers perfectly. Unfortunately, it bounced out of the rim.

However, Alli Osterberger, ‘16, grabbed the rebound and passed it out to Katy Fricano, ‘16. Fricano nailed a three pointer while also drawing a foul which brought her to the line. With 15.9 seconds on the clock and the score tied at 50-50, Fricano stepped up to free throw line, cool, calm, and collected (at least on the outside), and placed the ball through the hoop.

Bettendorf inbounded the ball and sped up the court. One Bulldog took a shot and missed, but they got the rebound. They put up another shot which banked in, and also drew the foul for an ‘and 1.’ The score was now 51-52 in favor of Bettendorf with 9 seconds left to play.

The Bettendorf player missed the free throw, Flynn grabbed the rebound, passed it up the court to Osterberger who passed it to Fricano. Fricano drove the lane and then went up for what most thought was a shot, but was actually a pass to Osterberger. This shot-pass sequence is something they actually practice.

Just before the buzzer, Osterberger hit the shot which granted the girls’ basketball team a 53-52 victory over the Bettendorf Bulldogs.

After a quick celebration, the team headed to the locker room where their excitement bounced off the walls. Jumping, screaming, hollering, and high-fiving, the girls celebrated their first win of the season.
