The varsity volleyball team clinched its second win of the season Tuesday night against Hempstead by coming back and winning 3-2. Many fans came out to support both teams, but more importantly to honor Shane Broderick, a 2012 graduate of Wahlert Catholic.

Shane is the brother of Clare Broderick, ‘20, a junior on the volleyball team. He passed away unexpectedly over a year ago. Before the game, Clare shared how her brother lived his life to the fullest, by being involved and competing.

“My brother was involved with so many things at Wahlert. Between football, cross country, student government and wrestling, Shane stayed busy while also staying focused,” Clare said.

Shane was loved by many and touched the hearts of everyone he encountered, especially those in the Wahlert community. Principal Ron  Meyers always loved having Shane in the hallways of Wahlert with his smile that lit up a room.

“Shane was a great young man who had a great sense of humor, along with a seriousness about his life, making the best out of all situations,” Meyers said.

He continued, “The Wahlert community and the Broderick family can and should celebrate Shane for his spirit that is forever with our hearts. He modeled leadership and what a Wahlert student should be.”

Mr. Meyers can see Clare following in Shane’s footsteps. Clare is also very involved with volleyball, track and FCA. She can often be found smiling or laughing among her friends and teammates.

Shane loved the excitement and spirit of inner city competition, so it was fitting to Clare that she had the opportunity to share his enthusiasm  with the rest of the players on her team.

“I loved the thought of having a night in Shane’s honor since he was very involved and I am, too,” she said.

The Broderick family hopes that they can continue to honor Shane at this volleyball game every year with the rest of the Wahlert and Hempstead communities.
